“Where strength meets elegance”, is what HP represents. Bridging that alliance between grit and grace.
The name Highstreet Pilates comes from my maiden name, “Hochstrasser”, (German, meaning Highstreet in English). My Dad, (ex rugby player and athlete), is the one who sparked my love for fitness at a young age, and I attribute that learned dedication to him. He also taught me that our name implies “high-level”. What I take from this is not aiming to be the best, but instead finding enjoyment in that constant pursuit to improve.
What is Classical Pilates?
Classical Pilates was developed by Joseph Pilates, and was known as “Contrology” at the time. He came from a background of bodybuilding, gymnastics, boxing, diving, and martial arts…all of which inspired his creation for the method. Contrology drew the attention of renowned dancers including Martha Graham and George Balanchine, which originally drew the dance community to his studio. A group of individuals that Joe trained became later known as the “elders”, and these teachers went on to preserve his techniques.
The classical system emphasizes precise movement, follows detailed transitions, and a repertoire of exercises. Instructors in the classical world sometimes refer to it as “authentic”, or “real” pilates. Modern variations of Pilates may follow more traditional strength training, fitness fusion styles, and combine this with influences of Joe’s work. Whereas the classical method stays true to what he created, giving you great results. Any form of pilates or exercise is great in my opinion! If you’re curious about the Classical system and what it can provide, then I recommend booking a session.
We’re committed to preserving the integrity of Classical Pilates — and that includes the equipment we use
We use a specific type of equipment, (think: reformers with leather straps, and much heavier springs!) That’s why all our apparatus are sourced from Gratz Industries and Pilates Designs, the two leading manufacturers trusted by classical studios.
Haven’t tried classical equipment before? Don’t worry, we’ll walk you through! The first thing you may notice is that the spring tension feels different, in the best way possible.
Vianna Lloyd-Butler
Growing up, I competed in track and field, and cross country. Pushing myself physically has always been something I’ve loved along with the mental challenge it brings. After graduating from college and transitioning from D1 track, I found myself called to more high-intensity group classes, and as a self proclaimed fitness junkie, I’ve tried almost everything! However, I began to feel the toll on my body, combined with feeling stiff from my 8-5 desk job. While various workouts helped me, I realized that I was missing something.
When I discovered Classical Pilates, I was hooked by how detailed it is — it feels like an escape each time because of the concentration that is requires. Pilates has made my body feel better than ever, and it makes me feel like an athlete again, seeking refinement, and celebrating the little improvements along the way. It never gets easier!
It took me almost a year to complete my 500 hour comprehensive classical certification led by Carrie Macy Samper. I’m lucky that I’ve connected with some of the most world renowned teachers that I can call my mentors. I previously and am still mentored on a weekly basis by second and third generation instructors to Joseph Pilates himself, and I attend workshops regularly.
My trust in the system was even more solidified after practicing during pregnancy and using it to reestablish that core connection postpartum. I’m still a fan of all things fitness, and you’ll still see me attending HIIT classes from time to time. I’m still trying to become a more skilled runner… just in a different way. My goal is to combine other modalities with Pilates, and use the method to enhance that performance.
My goal is simple: to help you feel stronger, more connected, and supported- wherever you’re starting from.
